JULY Permaculture Series: Intersection Repair, Social Permaculture and Mushroom Cultivation

July 15th,
7:00 pm until 9:00 pm

510 Second St.,
O’k Studio in the Alley (behind Salon Verve)
Traverse City, Michigan 49684

Join us at this discussion series and forum on the third Tuesday of each month. This is an invitation to further co-create a permaculture community in Traverse City and the NW Michigan region. This is an inspired endeavor growing locally and organically from the 2013 Michigan Permaculture Convergence, and catalyzed by Little Artshram and a very large web of Friends.

Have you ever been out in your garden, or chatting w. neighbors in front of your home-place and felt the urge to call out–loudly— “SLOW DOWN” to a zipping-by motorized vehicle?

If so, maybe you’d care to join us as at our monthly discussion and community forum as we discuss and get creative planning an Intersection Repair and the ways in which contribute to an even healthier Traverse City!

With a bit of history on the transportation grid and what the grid does to segregate our social interactions, (hint: it’s a legacy of oppression) we’ll look at the nuts and bolts of how our neighborhoods are structured, and the value of truly creating social spaces.

Each Intersection Repair project is the work of neighborhood residents. It is the people who live in the neighborhood who decide that they want the public square, or community/neighborhood garden and what it will look like, how it will function and how it will develop. One neighborhood may begin a weekly veg and art market, or paint a giant mural on the intersection and stop there. Another may go through many phases: painting the street, installing a community bulletin board, building a mini-cafe on a corner, reconstructing the intersection with brick and cobblestones, opening businesses to make it a village center… and on and on!

So how does this happen? Let’s get together share ideas, resources/skills, make plans and do it!

Gary Howe, a local bike enthusiast and community member will lead the discussion and share his thoughts and experiences exploring the topic of intersection repair.

Gary is a City Commissioner in Traverse City who became engaged in local politics out of a frustration in the disconnect between expressed community values and the details on the ground– in the street, in public spaces. He advocates for more inclusive infrastructure based on creating places for people that in turn are more attractive, engaging, and economically (in the full sense of the word) productive

Grand Traverse Edible Trails, Occupy Traverse City and other awesome change-making organizations…this may interest you!

ALSO….

As a follow-up to our May Permaculture Series on mushrooms, we welcome back Brian Rodgers to share a hands-on and wonderful garden “intersection repair” with a mushroom cultivation demonstration. Brian will share the how-to’s and creating a mycological habitat for growing mushrooms in our yard or gardens.

Donations accepted for the 2014 Traverse City PDC and LLOOF (Learning Local on Organic Farms) scholarship fund.

So far we have raised $164.00 towards scholarships with this series! Great job from a caring community!

Fresh Food donations accepted for the Friends Meeting House Community Meal program.

Please bring info/announcements to share
