Grand Traverse Earth Day ParadeGrand Traverse Earth Day Parade
The Earth Day parade has been a joyous spring ritual in the Traverse City area for over 18 years. In 2008, again it is our wish to create a testament to community and to express our gratitude to the beautiful place on planet Earth that we share. Using the ancient tradition of puppet and mask theater, and through the use of costumes, masks, big puppets, non-motorized floats, fantastic drumming, and garbage art instruments, the Earth Day parade will communicate our love and concern for air, water, earth, fire and all species.

Imagine a place where you are inspired to create your expression of awe and appreciation for the natural world...imagine an invitation open to all to participate--all people of diverse ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds....imagine an open art studio with a schedule of weekly art and music workshops at low-cost or no-cost...imagine the support of an amazing gathering of family and friends and artists...imagine a huge collection of recycled materials, art supplies, scavenged stuff and garbage art transformed into puppets, masks, floats...imagine a circle of community where creatures from our backyards and all places on Earth come to life and practice their movements and story for the Earth Day parade...imagine a building full of music, percussion, rhythm and the sounds and sights of instruments being made and practiced...YOU'VE JUST IMAGINED OUR EARTH DAY COMMUNITY ART STUDIO!

The Earth Day Parade and Community Picnic couldn't happen without community involvement and volunteer help. Both Little Artshram, a non-profit arts organization, and Rhythmic Adventures (who are both part of the Grand Traverse Earth Day Council) produces the event with a small core staff and about 12 volunteers. Please consider joining us in our efforts to present this annual spring community event!

Earth Day Residency ProgramsEarth Day Residency Programs
We offer many types of residencies, from a one-day workshop to a 10 week Parade Design Team. All are focused on blending art and music-making with performance and environmental education. Your participants can learn specific skills such as mask-making, giant puppet construction, stilt-walking and build musical instruments out of recycled items.
