WE LOVE THE EARTH, and

WE LOVE THE EARTH DAY PARADE

The Grand Traverse Earth Day parade has been a joyous spring ritual in the Traverse City area for over 20 years. In 2009, again with the support of many friends and like-minded organizations and businesses, we will express our gratitude for our beautiful home place on planet Earth. Since 2000, Little Artshram, has taught workshops and shared the skills of the ancient tradition of puppet and mask theater, through the use of costumes, masks, big puppets, non-motorized floats.

Rhythmic Adventures has joined efforts adding fantastic drumming, and the creation of garbage art instruments in our workshops and helped to organize parade section bands. Together, in this community-wide celebration, we have outlined a story-telling parade design, that communicates our love and concern for air, water, earth, fire and all species.

The 2009 parade theme is "Growing and Gardening", focusing on our "front and back-yards" and how we personally and collectively as neighbors address water and global warming issues through opportunities presented and everyday experiences in our "yards". We will ask ourselves : What does "Growing and Gardening" mean in urban, rural and wild landscapes?

AMAZING and FUN Opportunities for Earth Day 2009

How do we design and build the Earth Day Parade?

We begin by using three basic-parade rules to guide us and to create a safe, community gathering: No pets, No motors and No words.

  • No pets: Our animal friends can get freaked out by BIG puppets, and Little Artshram asks that folks share the risk and responsibility, for one day, honoring this request and leaving your wonderful pets at home.

  • No motors: This is a people-powered, foot-ed parade! Bikes are welcome! Let's make that a strong statement in this year's parade, and, create a parade that truly considers our carbon footprint.

  • No words: Unlike many other wonderful community events and street theater opportunities, this is an "illustrated story-telling" version, and spring-time celebration.

Rather than protest signs, printed out and carried, we become other species and characters of our parade story. Music-making, songs, chants and cheers to illustrate the message of each parade section are a-ok!

The Earth Day Parade, Green Fair and Community Picnic couldn't happen without community involvement and volunteer help. We produce this event with a small, mostly volunteer staff. We could not do this without your support and that of the community. Please consider joining us in our efforts to present this annual spring community event.

We couldn't do this without you, so, please join the fun by contacting the following 2009 Earth Day Team Leaders: Sponsorship/Green Fair: Mari von Walthausen, wildsun35@yahoo.com

"Can mindfulness cut my carbon footprint? How can understanding patterns in nature help me save money? What makes my workplace like an ecosystem? As a holistic, nature-focused design science, permaculture is usually presented in the context of sustainable agriculture. Yet it offers the potential to transform our lives in many other ways: external and internal, personal and collective, consciously and unconscious.

The goal of permaculture is to create harmonious relationships with all aspects of our life.

Join Penny Krebiehl, certified permaculture instructor, in two weeks of interactive "Talk and Tea", exploring how the ethics, principles, and design process of permaculture invite us to become more effective at whatever it is we do—in the garden, at the workplace, building a parade, or amongst our friends and family.
