Our Place
Our 2008 Summer Art-Farm Camp will again take place at the Community Gardens near the historic Barns that were once part of a working 54-acre, self-sufficient agricultural farm. This beautiful green-space which is just west of downtown Traverse City, has been described as our version of NYC Central Park. The landscape truly is pastoral with open space and meadows, and further west of both the Barns property and the Village of the Grand Traverse Commons development, eight hiking trails wind themselves through a beautiful woodland and wetland conservation area and wildlife habitat. Our Art-Farm Workshop is temporarily housed in the farm's old Garage Building which is rigged with a water catchment system where we are collecting rainwater in a 1500 gallon tank for our gardens.
Our Little Artshram programs are growing and we are eager to continue to integrate and educate the community about our work, and to also encourage you to continue your support of this shared vision of programming for children and their families that embraces creativity, nature awareness, and community building.
Beginning this spring, and as part of our long-term goal to operate a Community Learning Center at the Community Gardens and Barns property, we would like to sponsor Art and Permaculture-based trainings and workshops that connect to our Art-Farm curriculum. (See info. below about our first....)
Based on our work of sponsoring community-gatherings that focus on art and environmental educational for the past five years, our continued vision is to begin a tradition of offering
programs and classes through a Community Learning Center, year-round. The Learning Center would invite and benefit both residents and non-residents to our Northern Michigan home-place, and to bear witness to a community-owned, open green-space just off center of the heart of Traverse City.Additionally, we plan to bring in Artists and Permaculturists through a Residency Program that we are developing in 2008 under the guidance of the Alliance of Artist Communities organization. The Residency Program will invite Artists and Permaculturists to work in three-month long commitments held seasonally throughout the year.
Residents will overlap their studies and share skills...
- ...in the site analysis, design and development of the Community Learning Center as our proposed home-place, in the #221 Garage Building, near the Community Gardens and Historic Barns Property.
- ...through our Grand Traverse Earth Day Parade and Community Art Studio, held annually with parade building workshops and residencies beginning in January and continuing through April, at the ArtCenter of Traverse City.
- ...and, also our Summer Art-Farm Camps, beginning with garden prep in May through harvest-time in September, on the old State Hospital grounds, the Munson Trails, and the Village of Grand Traverse Commons.
Throughout the year, at the Community Learning Center, we will also continue to host shorter term trainings, skill-sharing and classes for potential apprentices, interns and educators that make up the evolving staff of Little Artshram.
