We offer many types of residencies, from a one-day workshop to a 10 week Parade Design Team. All are focused on blending art and music-making with performance and environmental education. Your participants can learn specific skills such as mask-making, giant puppet construction, stilt-walking and build musical instruments out of recycled items.
We begin with an idea. Our artists will work with you to plan the themes and structure of your residency. We encourage your school community to consider participating in the Grand Traverse Earth Day Parade and to work within the theme of this annual community event.
For a shorter term workshop or residency, a team of two or more artists from LIttle Artshram will set up a series of workshops with your group. Using improvisations and/or poetry, song and creative writing to develop a story, we all work to build simple puppets, masks, noisemakers and other theatrical effects. In rehearsal, participants will gain confidence while learning to animate their creations through movement, voice and dance. The result is a colorful, lively celebration.
Below is a brief outline for a one-day Earth Day Parade residency, with the theme of "integrating rather than separating" ourselves from nature:
We are Nature - Mask & Music-Making Workshop in Preparation for 2008 Grand Traverse Earth Day Parade
Presented by: Little Artshram and friends
Explore the old art of mask-making in the new world…. Nestled inside during the winter months we turn inward and explore the idea of nature, how we humans conceive of it, and the ways we connect ourselves to it…through art making, story and song.
With Little Artshram and Rhythmic Adventures learn the garbage-art method of building a nature inspired mask and musical instrument, which will speak and come alive with a lively and fun impromptu drumming and dance performance.
Bring your stories, poems, inspirations and any found natural (or otherwise) objects that you might want to incorporate into your mask.
