This annual gathering is an opportunity for our community gardeners to meet/greet and share a potluck, as well as, an invitation to the families and folks that participate in any of the gardening programs and projects, like the LLOOF (Learning Local on Organic Farms), Market Garden and CSA folks, coming together as a community, meet one another and learn more about the happenings at the gardens.
On the very same evening, right “next door”, we invite you to also consider enjoying and supporting our musical friends Steppin’ In it and Rachael Davis, who are setting up a dance floor and stage at the BIG Barns, with our neighbors The Botanic Gardens Of NW Michigan, to help raise funds for the extensive, Historic Barns restoration. Unless you are on bicycle, please prepare yourself to park your motorized vehicle, down by the TBAISD or another location at the Village of Grand Traverse Commons and enjoy an evening stroll down Silver Drive and past our tree friends and Champion Black Willows. You’ll find our summer gathering happening right inside the community garden gates, just a short distance from the BIG barns.
Summer time is our busiest time at Little Artshram, and 99% of our time is spent in either a “tame or wild” garden. We consider and are thankful to recognize the importance and gift of the green spaces we occupy as a “classroom”. Below we share information about the 2012 community gardening and permaculture programs we are gathering to celebrate:
While the Community Garden, LLOOF and Market Garden/CSA continues at the old State Hospital farm site, (now called Historic Barns Park), the 2012 Summer Camps will be held in a new location in our beloved Munson Woods, with Higher Grounds Trading Co. hosting us at the Village of Grand Traverse Commons, on the north-end of the same hundred-acre hard-wood forest.

Permaculture Summer Camps for children and youth…registration open! ……with a friendly gathering for families on Friday, June 22nd, from 4- 5:30 pm!
What is permaculture? We’ll provide two very easy definitions, one for the adults that may be reading this, and another for children.
Here’s the adult definition, shared by Claudia Joseph: “Permaculture is more than just good gardening. It is a life long approach to analysis, action and social structures that results in better relationships, more functional systems and a clearer understanding of everything necessary for human communities to thrive.” For younger folks: Permaculture is an introduction to observing and mimicking nature or learning nature’s language(s), including herbalism, and earth skills. Our camps are a creative, outdoor experience focused on discovering the intelligence of nature at work, care-taking the Earth and giving something back, with an emphasis on natural art, cooperative games and hands-on activities.
Our camps are for children and youth 5 and older, each camp meets M-Th, from 9 am to 3 pm, with Friday being a shorter, Family Day and picnic-lunch, from 11-1 pm @ one of our outdoor “classrooms or garden sites”.
We will be meeting outside of Higher Grounds Coffee Roastary each morning M-Th to begin our daylong adventures in the woods. Friday is a special Family Day which begins @ 11:00 am and ends @ 1:00 pm, with a family-friendly picnic lunch held at the teaching gardens at the community garden.
The 2012 Summer camps will be led by Penny Krebiehl and Marian Methner, with up to two, trained assistants, for each group of 24 children.

Share the news: We’re Taking Shares! We invite you to become either a Sponsor or Share-holder of our 2012 Market Garden & O’k CSA! Youth 18 years and older, work “green-collar” jobs as LLOOFers (Learning Local on Organic Farms) with O’k CSA, growing food at the community garden and four urban garden farms In Traverse City, for share-holders, food pantries and families in need.
This year, we are offering Full and Half-size shares of fresh vegetables, herbs and flower bouquets, as well as sponsorships, beginning June 29th, through the season (We predict 12 full weeks) with pick-up on Friday’s at the O’k Market at our Peace Patch garden farm site

Our Market Garden CSA goals:

As a Share-holder you will pick-up a bag of fresh produce which will include vegetable, herbs, flowers, (both annuals and perennials). We are planning that our first market day will be June 29th. Depending on the success of our gardening efforts, the season may extend into September, for 12 weeks. Your pick-up will be at the O’k Market @ the Peace Patch garden, corner of 7th and Oak St., every Friday, from 4-6 pm.

Some of this last season’s Market Garden produce, that we are planning to grow again: Kale, salad mix, green beans and soup beans, beets, heirloom and cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, potatoes, carrots, green peppers, eggplants, basil, chamomile, sage, parsley…and cut flower and herb bouquets….
Pick-up will take place at our O’k Market Garden site, on the corner of 7th and Oak St., TC, beginning around, June 29th and will continue through the season, EVERY Friday, 4-6 pm.

This program is based on the concept of CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture. On a CSA farm, buyers invest up front in a full season of vegetables. The commitment of the sponsors and shareholders to the farmer stabilizes the farmer’s income, assures subscribers of fresh, healthy, local produce, and distributes agricultural rewards and risks fairly within the community. This popular economic model establishes a practical and mutually beneficial relationship between farmers and subscribers, building a strong community as a result.
The LLOOF program has four main areas of experiential learning:
Education. Youth, 18 years through adults will participate in securing commitment of sponsors and shareholders, receive hands-on training in basic intensive urban gardening and permaculture techniques, including soil preparation and conditioning, seedling cultivation, use of nutrients and organic fertilizers, composting, irrigation and water collection, pest and weed education, harvesting and preparing and marketing food for sale. Some of the Gardening and recycling methods, that will be initiated this year, and are common to permaculture include edible landscaping, keyhole gardening, companion planting, trellising, sheet mulching, chicken tractors, solar greenhouses, spiral herb gardens, swales, and vermi-composting.
Production and Profitability. More than just a teaching garden, the garden farm sites are cultivated by O’k CSA and LLOOF participants and will be designed for production and profitability, hence demonstrating the viability of “green collar” jobs in small-scale agriculture. And we will eat from our garden, tasting and understanding what we are growing!
Mentorship. Participants will be mentored in gardening and permaculture practices and further develop those skills as they work alongside younger students in special field trips by the Summer Camp program.
Sustainability. O’k CSA and LOOFers will work together to design this year’s program to feed into and support next year’s market garden through record-keeping, and, develop a sustainable business plan, with ample startup funds. The LLOOF crew will work with O’k CSA, understanding the organizational structure and framework that Little Artshram provides as the non-profit sponsor. All LLOOFers will be participating in a special work-exchange Intro. to Urban Permaculture training, June through August 2012.

Little Artshram celebrates Community Gardening
at the Historic Barns Park!
Welcome to a new garden year at the “Barns Park Garden” a portion of the old State Hospital Farm!
Little Artshram is the Barns Park Community Garden manager and WELCOMES NEW, INTERESTED gardeners to rent a plot in our garden this year. The theme of this year’s garden is “UNITY IN COMMUNITY”, and we are looking forward to a great growing year with children, youth and adult gardeners!
Plot sizes available:
FULL, approx. 30 x 24’, rental fee $100.00
1/2 size, approx 15 X 24’, rental fee $75.00
1/3 size, approx 10 x 24’, rental fee $50.00
EVERYONE in our garden community contributes at least 10 hours of volunteer hours, which is organized by the CG Coordinator at the monthly potluck meetings.
NO use of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides allowed,
only organic fertilizer.
NO dumping or adding of compostable materials to our compost teaching site or on the property. Contact Little Artshram for donations of organic, toxin-free compost, material donation.
The well used to water the gardens is non-potable and should not be used as drinking water.
Little Artshram, is a non-profit organization and the care-taker and managers of the Barns Park Community Garden. We serve children, youth and families through our art, environmental education and community gardening projects. Do you know how much we value our community?
