Little Artshram is Pushing Ahead and Propagating Permaculture

On approximately one acre of Little Artshram’s garden-farm allotment at the Historic Barns Park, we are propagating plants for a forest garden, accepting donations of native fruit and nut trees, AND, while completing the Forest Garden and 7 Sisters Garden design in our upcoming Introduction to Urban Permaculture Design training, we are also growing annual and perennial vegetables for the Market Garden and O’k CSA…

“Permaculture is more than just good gardening. It is a life long approach to analysis, action and social structures that results in better relationships, more functional systems and a clearer understanding of everything necessary for human communities to thrive.” ~ C. Joseph

The Intro to Urban Permaculture Design is a 5 day intensive exploration of permaculture, meeting once a month in June and July, and three times in August. The Intro to UPD certificate verifies that you participated in a permaculture training course. Ten additional hours of field practice are required to earn the certificate.

Urban Permaculture is not only possible, but has been successful in a variety of municipalities in the U.S. and world. Why not here in North West Michigan, as we are one of THE most beautiful places in the United States of America, focusing on useful landscapes in public places. From Traverse City to Detroit oridinary and creative folks are re-thinking systems with the buzz-word of “urban renewal” being “tweaked” by permaculturists, addressing food security and the practicality of growing food inside or close to the city where it will be consumed.

Many of our schools are adjacent to City, State parks, or along the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore where even as little as five thousand square feet of land allocated to permaculture could yield year round produce and instruction opportunities to our children. The City could offer property tax incentives to associations that implement urban permaculture. With our abundant, fresh water lakes, and nutrient rich soils permaculture can be a reality here to the benefit of our environment, economic and consumable needs, cultural enrichment and the next generation.

The 2012 Introduction to Urban Permaculture Design training, will include special guest instructors:
Peter Bane, editor of the Permaculture Activist,
and author of The Permaculture Handbook: For Town and Country info on ordering here: http://permaculturehandbook.com/

Keith D Johnson is an experienced permaculture site designer and teacher. He has been providing consulting advice and design since 1979. He has developed an intimate knowledge of various regional landscapes, botany, soils, earthworks, natural building and other skills. With a wealth of experience in temperate climate permaculture systems he offers a range of consulting services to regional and distant clients.

Objectives:
1. To introduce students to fundamentals for sustainability.
2. To teach cooperative dynamics and positivism.
3. To learn about useful plants and ecosystems design.
4. To relate our needs to our local and global resources.
5. To study homesteading skills and off-grid technologies.

The LLOOF (Learning Local on Organic Farms) crew, will be attending the Introduction to Urban Permaculture Design training through a work exchange with the Market Garden and O'k CSA.

Here are FIVE ways to participate in the Traverse City Introduction to Urban Permaculture Design training, one weekend a month this summer, with 40 hours of training towards permaculture certification…

1. WORK EXCHANGE: Become a LLOOFer, and help grow food on four urban garden-farm sites for the Market Garden and O’k CSA, hours available May-Sept., and get a 40 hour Urban Permaculture training and CSA share in exchange…

2. TAKE A BREAK: Register for the training by June 6th and receive a %10 discount, rather than $650.00, you would pay $585.00.

(Individual session or weekend hours not applicable towards permaculture certification.)

4. BE THE CHANGE: Take the entire training course at the asked for fee, and join thousands of others, including those pictured here, who have encountered a life-changing experience, working towards the good of caring for the planet, all species–all people, and giving something back.

5.  SPONSOR THIS TRAINING AND HELP GROW PERMACULTURE EDUCATION:  We have several, willing, able and enthusiastic folks who need financial support to take this training, and can only provide a certain amount of LLOOFing positions.  If you are able to gift another with a valuable permaculture experience, please consider a donation.  Little Artshram is a tax-deductable 501.C3 non-profit, registered in the State of Michigan.
